Old Fibro Fences Contain Asbestos

Many older homes in NSW still have fibro (asbestos cement) fences, including the corrugated sheet fences often called "super six". Fibro made before the late 1980s is likely to contain asbestos. While it's intact it is low risk, but breaking, cutting, drilling or water blasting it can release fibres.

In NSW, removing more than 10 square metres of bonded asbestos must be done by a licensed asbestos removalist, and a typical boundary fence is well over that. Many fencers work with a licensed removalist and can organise the removal as part of the job. Please don't try to pull it down yourself. SafeWork NSW has more information.
